I Moved Schools for a Fresh Start — Why Do I Regret It?

I honestly thought this would feel different.

You moved schools because you wanted a fresh start. A new year, different people, a chance to do things differently.

But a few weeks in, you find yourself missing your old school.

That can be confusing when you were sure you were ready to leave.

You start remembering the things you did not have to think about there. You knew who to ask when you were unsure about something. You knew which emails needed dealing with straight away and which ones could wait. You knew who was likely to help, who was just having a bad day, and which problems would probably sort themselves out by tomorrow.

You knew how the place worked.

Now you are back to thinking about all of it.

You are still working people out. You do not always know what is expected unless someone tells you. You might leave a meeting wondering whether you understood it properly, or spend longer than you want deciding who to ask about something that used to feel straightforward.

It is not necessarily the big things that make a new school feel hard.

Sometimes it is the constant small decisions.

And when you are tired of thinking about things that used to be automatic, your old school can start looking different.

You remember the colleague you could ask a daft question without feeling daft. You remember knowing which pupils needed a different approach. You remember knowing where you stood.

That familiarity can be easy to overlook when you have it.

Then it is gone.

And suddenly the thought appears:

Maybe I should never have left.

What are you actually missing?

When you say you miss your old school, what do you mean?

Do you miss the school itself?

Or do you miss knowing your place in it?

That is worth thinking about before deciding the move was a mistake.

Because missing the people, the routines, or the feeling of knowing how things worked is not quite the same as wanting to go back.

You are comparing somewhere you knew well with somewhere you are still learning.

That does not give you an answer about whether the new school is right for you.

But it might help you understand why it feels so uncomfortable right now.

So if the thought “I regret moving schools” keeps coming back, try asking yourself one thing:

What am I actually missing?

If you keep going round in circles with that and want to talk it through, book an intro call and we can look at what is going on for you.
